Foreign Languages
Wayland Academy has chosen Spanish as the foreign language to teach in Grades K
through 6 because it is rapidly becoming the second language of the United
States and will serve as an invaluable tool as the youngsters travel throughout
the many Spanish-speaking countries in our hemisphere and throughout the world.
Spanish can also be a very useful language in many careers, especially for
workers who interact with the public (teachers, lawyers, doctors, nurses, social
workers, engineers, salespersons, bank employees, etc.).
Our teachers will provide the students with an elementary background in basic
Spanish vocabulary. Common conversational situations and dialogue will enable
students to read, write and speak short passages of the language. The
emphasis in Spanish will be on introducing students to another language by
listening to tapes and by using simple introductory worksheets. The course
is designed to be fun for the children and so perhaps to encourage them to study
the language in depth at a later time.
Attention will be paid to elementary cultural material from Spain and from
South and Central American countries (including Mexico and Puerto Rico). This
material includes children's games, folk songs for choral singing, fairy tales,
legends, and simple arts and crafts.
